Dairy Milk Alternatives

If you look at the food pyramid, you’ll see that milk is one of the essential items that you need to drink two to three cups per day. This is according to the official pyramid of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

However, there has been debate over this matter. A team of researchers from the Harvard School of Public Health released their own food pyramid. In this one, milk isn’t a part of the recommended diet. Why is that?

While the USDA explains that milk is an excellent source of calcium and potassium, the researchers from Harvard say these minerals can be obtained from other sources like vegetables, and lactose-free dairy.

Milk is also high in calories. A cup of 2 percent milk already has nearly 140 calories. If you drink three cups as recommended by the USDA, you’d be taking in over 400 calories to your diet.

Not only that, the researchers also point out that there’s significant evidence linking milk and certain cancers like prostate cancer and ovarian cancer. But just to clarify, the increased risk is seen among those who consume three or more cups of dairy milk a day.

If you’re a milk lover, you don’t have to give it up entirely. Fact is, there are many kinds of milk. It’s not only dairy milk. Check out the infographic above to learn how to make other kinds of milk.
