Foods to Eat to Control High Blood Pressure

Your diet–what you eat or don’t eat–certainly affects your blood pressure level. Those who are suffering from hypertension are constantly advised to munch on raw garlic or take garlic supplements. It’s for a good reason.

Why Garlic?

Garlic contains an active substance called allicin that has been found to reduce blood pressure levels. However, garlic should be eaten in raw form, ideally crushed. Allicin is destroyed during cooking.

Apart from garlic, people with hypertension can also benefit from cucumbers and apple cider vinegar. Cucumber is a natural diuretic that lowers pressure in the arteries. It also keeps the body hydrated. Vinegar, meanwhile, reduces blood pressure by alkalizing the body.

What to Avoid

On the other side of the fence, some foods should be avoided. Salt for example makes the kidneys hold more water. Carrying more water increases the level of blood pressure. Coffee is also a bad idea, as it spikes up blood pressure. The caffeine in the  coffee is said to block the hormone responsible for keeping arteries widened. Caffeine also prompts the release of more adrenaline, which is also a known blood pressure raiser.

In addition to diet, your physical activity also has an effect on your blood pressure level. A research study published in the Hypertension journal of the American Heart Association revealed that regular exercise keeps the blood pressure stable on a healthy level.
